At issue

The ravages of war affect as least one person in every home in America. With our advanced technologies, we enter daily into a fighting soldier’s life as they battle terrorism, injustice, and for the very lives of the innocent.

In response

This educational forum is geared toward resourcing and equipping those who have accepted their place in the front lines, by providing mental health services to our returning service men and women here on the home front.

Session Descriptions

“Post Military Integration”
Presenter:
Lieutenant Colonel Joe Rice

TBN

“No Man’s Land – Combat Trauma and Grief”
Presenter: Cindy Campbell

Our troops returning from deployment is a time of great excitement and joy. It may also be a time of stress, frustration, or disappointment that does not meet the hopes and expectations. Grief associated with Combat Trauma can overshadow this time of reconnection. In this session we learn what to expect, how to work through the grief and accept the new realties of being ‘at home’ but still internally “at war.”

“The Killing Field of Sexual Addiction”
Presenter: Dr. Harl Hargett

The debate has been raging for sometime in the professional worlds of mental health.  Is there really such a thing as a 'sexual addiction?'  If so, how do you diagnose it?  What kind of trauma does it inflict? Does it damage the soul and/or the Spirit?  What does treatment or intervention consist of?  How does the world of Cybersex make it worse?  This session explores these questions and attempts to provide the answers.

“The Ambush of Anger”
Presenter: Tim Lang

Dealing with the combat trauma can trigger the ambush of anger. Anger can sometimes be a signal of an underlying problem or issue that can ‘blow up.’ In this session we will tackle the roots of anger, how to recognize risky situations and prevent rage before it erupts. Non-violent coping mechanisms will be highlighted.

“Avoiding Semaphore Communication”
Presenter:
Char Benson

Communicating so that someone can understand takes effort. Semaphore communication is a flag code used in the military. However useful, talking in code is not helpful in developing relations, getting your point across, or as a means of self expression. This workshop will take a look at practical ways to express love to your partner and those around you by giving them the precious gift of listening. We will learn skills which provide the framework to talk about the most difficult subjects and to handle conflict effectively.

“Military Substance Abuse”
TSGT Steve Glick

Between 30 and 50 percent of people with post-traumatic stress disorder will also abuse substances. As many as half of all PTSD patients treated in the Veterans Health Administration also have a substance abuse problem, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs' own information. That is potentially a big concern since as many as one out of every four soldiers, or 28 percent, in combat brigade teams could be at risk for developing PTSD, according to a Department of Defense Task Force on Mental Health report from June 2007. Almost 40 percent of soldiers who have returned home report psychological symptoms, according to the report found at military.com. What can be done? Where can a family turn for help? This will be explored in this session.

“Left Behind”
Presenter: Rick Duncan

In this session we will delve into the emotions, fears, anxiety, pride, joy and honor of living this life of the family member who is left behind during deployment. How does one cope at home when our loved ones are seemingly on the dark side of the moon in radio silence? What does a mother do when the everyday activity of answering the telephone becomes a moment that signals her worst fears? Rick Duncan will speak from the personal perspective of multiple deployments and the effect that it had on him and his family.

“Reconnaissance: Troops Missing In Action”
Presenter: Dr. Mars Robinson

Men most often identify themselves based on what they do; but how a man identifies who he is as a ‘combat ready troop may not work as he reconnects with his spouse and children. Here we will endeavor to defined masculinity in relationship in the demilitarized zone.
