Emotional Freedom Techniques
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a method of acupressure developed by Gary Craig, an engineer, who decided there must be an easy, simple way to teach people to use acupressure without having to understand the uses of all the different points. His one-size-fits-all set of points can be used for depression, anxiety, head aches, pain management, improving sports—almost anything you can think of.
Based on acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, acupressure stimulates points by tapping or massage rather than using needles. The concept is that there are blockages in the energy systems that interfere with the body’s natural health. By breaking up the blockages using tapping or massage, the systems can once again function optimally. Negative thinking can be a form of blockage. EFT is wonderful for getting rid of old negative messages and replacing them with positive thinking. It’s great for improving a golf game or a run down the ski slopes, or team focus in soccer, basketball, swimming—you name it.
Because EFT uses one’s own fingers, it can be applied anytime and anywhere at no additional cost to the user. The points are easy to learn and to remember. I teach a simplified version to preschoolers who can use the points to calm themselves or to help them focus as well as just plain feeling better.
In the hands of a professional therapist, EFT is a powerful tool useful for resolving all sorts of traumas. Often this can be used in a therapy session and then taken home as homework to use throughout the week. I teach this to almost everyone I see in my office because it’s so useful and so easy to learn.
